whoa the new dA submit page

Felt like drawing my OC Aelis again. The last time he had a solo picture was around April or May last year... ?__? One of the reasons I draw him so infrequently is probably my inability to draw swords lol. And he always appears with a sword.
I was halfway through painting this thing when I realised I have absolutely no idea how to draw wings OTL. So I had to pause halfway to find references and tutorials....Having to draw them feather by feather was tedious but I'm pretty satisfied with the result. :D

I've been dabbling with semi-realism lately so I decided to incorporate some elements into this painting. But in the end I'm probably going to stick with anime-manga style :>

Very good. I like the angle, perspective and shading.

However, as a martial artist, I look at this and think of just how easy it would be to knock the sword out of his hands and overpower him.  The main issue is the way he's holding the sword.  Your character is holding his sword out away from him, which is just horrible in a fight.  Try drawing the sword a bit closer in (no pun intended), so that he will have more power and maneuverability when a sword strikes down upon him.
Also, there is his stance.  That stance might be alright for most other things, but in combat, you will want a much more stable stance.  You want the feet to be about even with the shoulders, and have the knees be bent a little bit.
Lastly, his hands would be a bit farther apart, but I suppose they can be alright where they are.

All in all, it really is a great piece of art.  The bodily proportions are great, and the realism is beautiful.  I suppose if you wanted you could use this picture to display him being untrained, if you wanted.  Keep at this; you'll go far!

Thank you for that really long and insightful comment ;w;
I profess I now next to nothing about martial arts hahas. I will definitely pay more attention to this when I draw fighting poses in the future!

I use a soft airbrush for colouring skin and stuff.
It helps to use a non-blending brush to colour clothes sometimes... But other than that I don't think it's much different from what you're doing now :iconkissingplz:
